The unfixed film is stained for one minute, as much of the solution being used as the cover-glass will hold without spilling. Next, to the staining fluid upon the specimen are added, drop by drop, eight or ten drops of distilled water a sufficient to develop a reddish tint at the margins of the cover-glass and a semitrans- lucency in the stain, with a metallic scum on the surface ... eosinophile granules, pink; fine basophile granules, deep blue; and coarse, mast cell granules, deep royal purple.
